Fuel for Steam Boilers

What is the Most Economical Fuel for Steam Boilers?

Steam boilers are heavy-duty system that hugely depend on the kind of fuel that is being used in them. Whether it is a power generation system or a any processing plant, they rely on the operational efficiency of the boilers. Reducing cost without impacting performance is what they aim for. Optimizing how the fuel is being used can reduce the expenses considerably. A balanced approach of price, performance, efficiency and maintenance needs to be followed. Sun Boilers has given detailed analysis of major fuel with all pro and cons.

Why Fuel Economy Matters in Steam Boilers

Fuel is vital in the steam boilers because it contributes significantly to the industrial operation costs. Using economical fuel matters for the industries for multiple reasons. Sun Boilers has described the major benefits associated with economical fuel and operation.

  • It lowers the monetary cost of operations and overall operational cost.
  • Prolongs the boiler life as less fuel is used, which leads to less wear and tear on the surface.
  • Helps the businesses in achieving sustainability goals by lowering emissions.
  • Allows the businesses to save significantly and invest in other operations and scale to new heights.

Common Fuels Used in Steam Boilers

Here are the common fuels used in steam boilers:

Natural Gas

Natural gas is based on fossil fuels. It is primarily composed of methane and relies on a pipeline system. It burns neatly with minimal emissions and high efficiency. These are commonly used in industrial plants that involve continuous processing.

Biomass Fuel/Briquette

Mostly biomass are agricultural waste like mustard husk, ground nut shell, sun flower hulls, paddy straw and sugar cane trash. Rice husk is also one biomass majorly used in boilers in rice industries. Briquette are compact forms of biomass. They are considered carbon neutral because carbon emitted during combustion is part of the natural carbon cycle. Due to this they are most preferred and recommended fuel for boilers.

Coal

Both finely grounded and large pieces of coal are used for small to large industrial processes. It provides consistent heat because of its high calorific value. Coal is a fossil fuel and have high ash content also. But due to its high caloric value coal is most commonly used in the industries.

HSD/Diesel

HSD/Diesel are most commonly used as backup for natural gas systems. HSD has very high calorific value and Its storage is also easier. But due to its high cost, most industries use HSD fuel for backup boiler only.

Furnace Oil

Furnace oil is a fuel with very high viscosity. Furnace oil needs special handling and heating system for properly feeding into the burner. It delivers high energy per unit volume but contains very high sulphar content. Due to presence of sulphar, its not encouraged in industries and not very commonly used now a days.

Which Fuel is the Most Economical?

An economical fuel is not just based on its cost per unit volume.  Sub Boilers has identified factors like calorific value, combustion efficiency, availability, moisture content and transportation costs and handling requirements. Fuel that can deliver maximum steam output at the lowest overall operating cost is considered as most economical.

  • Biomass costs low to medium if locally available. Handling and storage costs a bit more due to the moisture content but still can be considered as the most economical fuel.
  • Coal has great boiler efficiency and less cost. However, the maintenance cost is high and operational cost is also high compared to biomass fuel.
  • Natural gas and HSD costs slightly higher but offers clean combustion and also requires less maintenance but not recommended due to high operation cost.

Conclusion

Biomass is considered the ideal choice given its boiler efficiency, handling and pollution free combustion abilities. Biomass is emerging as a preferred choice due to its sustainable value. Natural Gas is considered as the most clear fuel to run in any boiler but due to its high cost its not feasible to run economically. But studies shows that even the best fuel cannot sustain without good steam boiler. A well-designed steam boiler is aimed at maximizing heat transfer, reducing fuel consumption and ensuring long-term performance. Sun Boilers Pvt Ltd. has been designing and delivering reliable boilers for hundreds of industries and provided the turnkey solutions across India and globe.
